Ferries to Vinalhaven leave from Rockland
harbor several times a day. The ferry takes cars (a
limited number), bicycles, and foot travelers.
Vinalhaven has a large conservancy area
including fields and shoreline within walking
distance of the dock. Among the island’s charms is
its working harbor, Victorian village with
restaurants and shops, and (retired) granite
quarries.
For Vinalhaven, Manticus, and North
Haven contact the Maine State Ferry Service at

RIVER WATCH
View from the living room at twilight.
Seven large islands, Monhegan,
Islesboro, Vinal Haven, Manticus, North
Haven, Deer Island, and Isle le Haut,
and many smaller islands shelter the
Penobscot Bay. They are easy to reach,
and an adventure to visit.
The Monhegan-Thomaston Boat Line
in Port Clyde (207-372-8848; monheganboat.
com) runs several round trips daily to
throughout summer and autumn.
Monhegan is a birder’s sanctuary, a
walker’s paradise, an artist's canvas, a poet's
muse. It lies on a major migratory route, and
has one of the most dramatic shorelines in
Maine, as a well as a picturesque cemetery, an
historical museum, and many artist's studios,
some of which are open to the public.
Seventeen miles of coastal and inland paths lace
the island, threading through primeval forest or
along rocky heights. The island attracted 19th
and 20th century artists, including the Wyeth
family.
A great day trip. (Visit briegull.

Or, spend the night at either the
Monhegan Island Inn (islandinnmonhegan.
com) overlooking the harbor, or the "in-town"
Monhegan House (monheganhouse.com).
